DISTRIBUTION: Sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal and Somalia, south to S Africa; br visitor to sw Arabian Peninsula. In s Africa, n and c Namibia, n and e Botswana, Zimbabwe, c and s Mozambique, Limpopo Province, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Swaziland, KwaZulu-Natal and sporadically into E Cape as far south as Komga area7.
Breeding Migrant

POPULATION & DEMOGRAPHY: Seasonally common to abundant. In s Mozambique, est > 10 000 birds20. Prey of Peregrine Falcon15.

MOVEMENTS & MIGRATIONS: Breeding intra-African migrant from tropical Africa10. Present mostly Sept-May7, but in north of region, small numbers year-round3,7. Moves locally, following fruiting cycles of trees.

HABITAT: Savanna woodland and riverine forest.
