GEOGRAPHICAL VARIATION: In both upper part and underpart coloration. Subspp: Africa 4, s Africa 2.
1. T. v. quadricolor (Cassin) 1852, Proc. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philad., 5(1951):245; Port Natal ( = Durban, KwaZulu-Natal). Limpopo Province, Mpumalanga, Swaziland and KwaZulu-Natal. (Described under Identification.) 2. T. v. quartus (Clancey) 1960, Durban Mus. Novit., 6(2):40; Lengwe, s Chikwawa district, Malawi. Zimbabwe and Mozambique; extralimitally, to Malawi. Upper parts paler and more yellowish green than T. v. quadricolor, especially on crown, nape and rump. Yellow supercilium more pronounced. Underparts more coppery; flanks paler, green wash fainter. Taxonomic Note: Split from Perrin's Bush-Shrike T. viridis (Vieillot) 1817 in 1851 as T. quadricolor. The 2 spp are now considered conspecific1, so the earlier name takes precedence. |

| CONSERVATION: Not threatened. Historical habitat loss has undoubtedly occurred due to clearing of natural areas for agriculture (especially sugar cane), but bush encroachment has provided substitute habitat13. |
