DISTRIBUTION: Patchy, from Gabon, s DRC and se Somalia south to e Africa1. In s Africa, confined to east and south-east, from n and e Zimbabwe, s Mozambique and ne S Africa, south through Swaziland lowveld to ca 30°E on KwaZulu-Natal coast13,14.
Resident

POPULATION & DEMOGRAPHY: Fairly common to common3. In s Mozambique, est > 20 000 birds14. In Swaziland lowveld, density in Acacia savanna est 2.5 birds/100 ha8; in broad-leaved woodland est 2.5-3.5 birds/100 ha9. Territory size typically < 2 ha3. Female may breed in first year4, but male probably not until end of second year. Longevity 6.5 yr3.

MOVEMENTS: No evidence for significant movements12-14, but birds br in deciduous woodland may move locally to moister evergreen habitat in winter3,4.

HABITAT: Dense, tangled secondary growth (incl bramble and Cherrypie Lantana camara), thickets and undergrowth in closed woodland, riparian forest, wooded drainage lines in thornveld, forest fringes, dune forest and coastal evergreen forest patches with thick undergrowth of lianas and Buckweed Isoglossa woodii3,10.
