VOICE: Calls throughout day, year-round, but most vocal in br season4. In spring and summer, territorial male calls consistently. Loud, emphatic whistle, with 2 syllables - kon-koit - one or both of which may be repeated, varying geographically4,10. Near Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, typical call kong-kong-koweet, sometimes kong-koweet-koweet or kongkowick-kowick. Often preceded by faint klink and followed by quiet, clicking rattle6. Thought to be given by male only, but when 2 pairs involved in boundary dispute, > 2 birds gave whistled calls7. Female repertoire largely comprises harsh rasping and tearing sounds sometimes given in duet with male whistle). Contact call a low, croaking gog or graagg. Contact call of juv slightly higher pitched3. Both sexes give guttural Gggrrr in alarm and as warning4.
