IDENTIFICATION: 23-32 cm; male 140 g, female 230 g. Sexes alike in plumage coloration.

Ad: Crown and hind neck black; sides of face, chin and throat white, grading to golden-yellow on chest. Mantle, back, rump, tail, wings and belly rich chestnut; primaries black. Bill and fleshy frontal shield vivid chalky blue. Eyes brown. Legs and feet grey.

Juv: Crown and hind neck brownish black; supercilium and face white, with black line through eye. Back, wings and tail pale brown. Throat, breast and belly white, sides of breast washed yellow. Bill pale grey; grey frontal shield much reduced. Legs and feet pale grey.

Confusing species: Juv easily confused with Lesser Jacana, but is much larger, with a (small) frontal shield and no white trailing edge to secondaries.
