VOICE: Gives a wide variety of calls, significance and function of many largely unknown36,40. Common contact calls incl a sharp, shrill kik or krik, a low reedy kek or kert, a trilled krrt, a double cluck pickup, or clukuk or k-kek, and a deep hoop, koop or kup, with reedy overtone36,40. Alarm calls incl metallic, ringing cro-oo-k, and snorting tcholf40; group predator alarm call a nasal, high-pitched hue-hue-hue49. Birds approaching nest give low, repeated kiow36,40. Strange, breathy, humming vvvv, also recorded19, perhaps same call described as hinny given by birds passing one another or before diving46.
