GEOGRAPHICAL VARIATION: Mainly in underpart coloration and extent barring on lanks and undertail. Supspp: Africa 2, s Africa 2.
1. C. b. burchellii Swainson. From se Botswana and extreme s Zimbabwe east to Maputo, Mozambique; south through Limpopo and NW Provinces, Mpumalanga, Gauteng and n and e Free State to Swaziland and KwaZulu-Natal, and from s KwaZulu-Natal through coastal regions to sw W Cape6. (Described under Identification). 2. C. b. fasciipygialis Reichenow, 1898, Ornithol. Monatsber., 6:23; Quilimane ( = Quelimane), Mozambique. Mozambique north of Inhambane, e Zimbabwe and extreme ne S Africa. Extralimitally, through n Mozambique and Malawi to s Tanzania. Smaller than C. b. burchelli; underparts whiter, flanks and undertail coverts lack barring. Taxonomic Note: Previously considered conspecific with White-browed Coucal13; now accorded specific status6. |
