VOICE: Calls most frequently early morning, but may continue throughout day and on moonlit nights. Advertising call a cascade of bubbling notes, first descending scale, then ascending; likened to sound of water being poured from bottle14. Starts slowly at ca 4 notes/sec, then quickens; finally, notes merge and fade away. Given individually or in duet. Varies with region, context and sex. Also gives a hooting call, but context unknown. In aggression, gives explosive and repetitive cluck. Hisses in alarm14. Nestlings beg with buzzing call14.
