GEOGRAPHICAL VARIATION: Mainly in head coloration. Subspp: Africa 3, s Africa 110.

1. H. s. cyanoleuca Vieillot, 1818, Nouv. Dict. d'Hist. Nat., 19:401; coast of Angola (restricted to Benguela by Traylor, 1960, Pub. Cult. Comp. Diam. Angola., Lisbon, 51:163). From Angola, n Namibia and Botswana east to Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi (where intergrades with nominate), south through Zimbabwe and Mozambique to KwaZulu-Natal7,11. (Described under Identification.)

Taxonomic Note: H. s. fuscopilea Reichenow (w Africa and Congo Basin) recorded once, Cunene R, n Namibia June 19515.

MEASUREMENTS: H. s. cyanoleuca wing (150 unsexed) 105-120 (111.8)11,14; tail no data; tarsus no data; Malawi culmen (27 unsexed) 44-51 (47.2±1.9)14; ne S Africa mass (6 unsexed) 60-81 (69.7)9, Malawi (27 unsexed) 54-76 (62.5±5.2)14 (mean mass decreases from pre-br 66.5 (Oct-Nov), to post-br 59 (Feb))11,13.
 
MOULT: At Nchalo, s Malawi, no ad moult recorded Oct-Apr13, indicating that primary moult occurs after northward migration, completed before return. Imms start primary moult at 8-9 mo, duration ca 124 d13.
 
CONSERVATION: Not threatened, but continued destruction of woodland, especially riparian woodland, cause for concern7.
